The Man of Steel, disarmed by Lois Lane's lovemaking and nearly wiped out by four supercriminals from long-vanished Krypton. A puckish sequel to the original, laced with a lot of Keatonesque slapstick. Grandiose, tongue-in-cheek, good fun.
Superman Returns

The most enjoyable moments in this $363-million behemoth are when Brandon Routh's Superman flies through the air with the greatest of ease. The movie often soars despite Routh's lackluster performance and Kevin Spacey's refusal to ham up Lex Luthor. (K.W.)

Support Your Local Sheriff
Released: 1967
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A genial and uncommonly resourceful gent - who makes no bones about his own cowardice, and describes himself as "basically on my way to Australia," cleans up one of the roughest, wildest, bloodiest cattle towns in the mean old West. His weapons: a fast finger and a faster tongue. This is one of the few Western spoofs that really works - largely because Burt Kennedy has drawn so heavily and lovingly from genre classics like My Darling Clementine and Rio Bravo. (M.W.)
Surf's Up
Released: 2007

This animated tale of the Penguin World Surfing Championship is amusing, though not terribly robust. The marine visuals are lovely but should support a stronger story and more memorable characterizations. (M.I.)

A revealing portrait of Doc Paskowitz, a doctor who shrugged off bourgeois comforts, moved to Israel and founded a nine-child surfing dynasty. Via eye-opening interviews with the now-adult Paskowitz kids, we realize that for all the seeming mellowness of their nomadic existence, the way of the Doc was not easy. (K.J.)

Swamp Water
Released: 1941
Rated:

An unfairly neglected American masterpiece. Renoir made it only two years after The Rules of The Game; Swamp Water came out the same year as Citizen Kane, and in some ways, it's just as much of an esthetic milestone. The lyrical evocation of primitivism among the rural "poor whites" of the South has the simplicity and charm of a folk ballad.
