A sex-addicted New Yorker (Michael Fassbender) engages in a provocative push-pull with his needy, chancy younger sister (Carey Mulligan). Harrowing and heartrending, this is a film that feels akin to going into battle. (K.J.)
Shampoo

Rated:
Now Playing? No
The erotic adventures of George, a motorized Beverly Hills hairdresser with a blower in his belt - on the Nov. 1968 Night Old Dickie Drove Us Down. A swift gorgeously mounted, lightly satiric carnal comedy with a poignant climax that comes like a sudden stop on a runaway carousel. (M.W.)

Shark 1969
Released: 1932
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A viciously exciting thriller about a quartet of amoral characters on a seamy Mexican treasure hunt: at one point, the "heroine" remarks to the "hero", "We're both a couple of bastards - only I'm a rich one." Shark! also has nerve-rendingly authentic underwater footage - one of the cameramen was killed filming it - but, unfortunately, its producers hacked up the finished footage. According to Sam Fuller: "I asked them to take my name off the damn thing, because I didn't like the cut I saw. I thought it was terrible...I do know I had fun with the characters, because I went beyond the average switch of revealing the villain. I also didn't have a guy just letting a girl go off to jail: he lets her be eaten up by the sharks. I've never seen anything like that in a picture before. Have you?"
Shark Night 3D
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
This shark-attack film sticks close to the playbook: a collection of young, comely bodies are picked off one by one. Winking at these well-worn tropes is half the fun in this kind of entertainment, but Shark Night 3D is about as joyless as they come. (K.J.)

She Done Him Wrong

Perhaps the finest hour of the impossibly blonde and buxom Queen of innuendo, Mae West - the only actress who made a film debut and became a major movie sex symbol in her 40s and stayed a sex symbol (of sorts) into her 80s. This movie, of course, introduces those deathless lines (courtesy of Ms. West, the playwright): "Come up and see me some time" and "Beulah, peel me a grape."(M.W.)
