She's Out of My League
Released: 2010

Now Playing? No
An accomplished, attractive woman (Alice Eve) falls for a schlumpy airport security worker (Jay Baruchel). This raunchy comedy owes a big debt to Knocked Up, and it isn't as good, but the jokes and performances are better than average. (K.B.)

Released: 2006
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
Shenandoah
Released: 1965

Sentimental Civil War drama, about a "neutral" farming family. So heavily influenced by John Ford, that you wonder if the project was originally offered to him. (M.W.)
Sherlock Holmes

Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
With Watson (Jude Law) at his side, Holmes (Robert Downey Jr., an inspired casting choice) uncovers a satanic plot that takes him from the lowliest subterranean hellholes to the (literally) highest levels of Parliament. Guy Ritchie has reinvented the chilly, brainiac character as a tortured genius, ladies' man (sort of) and occasional back-room brawler. (M.S.)
Sherlock Holmes and The Secret Weapon

Rated:
Now Playing? No
Basil Rathbone's Sherlock, once again engaged in an improbable, but engaging, battle with Nazis.
Sherlock Holmes Faces Death

One of the better ones in this series, based n Doyle's "The Musgrave Ritual."
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
The master detective (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) go head-to-head with the villainous Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). The sequel is fun, witty and satisfying. (S.R.)

In wide-ranging, exactingly detailed interviews with survivors and witnesses, Claude Lanzmann's landmark Holocaust documentary examines atrocities in Poland. It's a bold artistic gesture -- Lanzmann tries to capture the essence of the horror by inviting viewers to spend 10 uncomfortable hours with it. (K.B.)

Shoeshine
Released: 1946

One of the greatest of all the postwar Italian "new-realist" films: an emotionally annihilating portrayal of two lower-class youngsters, swept up in the tide of corruption that plagued Italy after the Liberation...focusing on their steady, inexorable brutalization, first by the Roman Black Market, later in the vicious reform school. A devastating film, compassionate and uncompromising. It will shake you. (M.W.)
Sholay
Released: 1975
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
In the village of Ramgarh, retired police chief Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) plots to bring down the notorious bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) and enlists the help of two lesser criminals, Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra). When Gabbar attacks the village, however, Jai and Veeru wonder why Thakur does nothing to help them. They soon learn that he has no arms, and that Gabbar was the one who cut them off. Enraged by this, they redouble their efforts to help. (TMS)
Shoot 'Em Up
Released: 2007
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
A mystery man (Clive Owen) delivers a woman's baby during a shootout and then must protect the newborn from gunmen. There's not a lot to this action-movie satire other than endless gunfights, and even those sloppily edited. (M.S.)
Shoot the Moon
Released: 1982
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A successful writer deserts his wife and four daughters for a younger woman; then, while she adjusts to the wreckage, he feels the screws of jealousy and guilt twist in on him. An ambitious attempt at Bergmanesque chamber drama by director Alan Parker (Midnight Express) and writer Bo Goldman (Melvin and Howard, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest). I found it spurious and strident, but others may be moved.

In this above-average shoot-'em-up, Mark Wahlberg plays an ex-military sniper who gets framed for the assassination of a U.S. president. Although the movie's ambitions are slight, it achieves them. (K.W.)
