The credits read "Based on an idea by Leo McCarey and thereby hangs a tale." McCarey, desperate for cash improvises the rather ??? plot of this movie to Sam Goldwyn at one of his story conferences. McCarey was a master raconteur; Goldwyn, entranced, bought the story for $50,000, bailing the director out of his debts. Then, after setting up the entire project, Goldwyn offered him the chance to direct it. McCarey's legendary response "What makes you think I would want to spend my valuable time on a piece of crap like The Cowboy and The Lady? "

In this remake of George Romero's 1973 film, an experimental bio-weapon lands in a rural town’s water supply and infects the residents. It's a solid thriller, though there's precious little here that hasn't been seen countless times before. (M.S.)

A small Pennsylvania city is accidentally hit by biological warfare - a chemical that progressively turns the entire population into homicidal maniacs. A triumph in the art of make-up, digital and analog, this picaresque fable stars Brad Pitt as the eponymous hero, who was born old and grows younger every day. The movie has a little trouble getting off the ground, and it’s much too long, but Pitt’s performance is quite moving, keeping us constantly aware of life’s utter transience. (K.W.)

The first entirely posthumous Inspector Clouseau film, in which an equally inept American detective is sent to track down the missing sleuth. Surprisingly funny, despite the relative ineffectiveness of Ted Wass as Peter Sellers' replacement. But they really should put this series to rest, especially after David Niven's demise.

Ron Howard's movie version of Dan Brown's novel, in which a Harvard professor (Tom Hanks) and a Parisian cryptographer (Audrey Tautou) try to track down the Holy Grail, fails to get a decent spook going. Howard has illustrated the book beautifully, but he hasn't made it his own. (K.W.)
