The Curse Of The Pink Panther

Rated:

The first entirely posthumous Inspector Clouseau film, in which an equally inept American detective is sent to track down the missing sleuth. Surprisingly funny, despite the relative ineffectiveness of Ted Wass as Peter Sellers' replacement. But they really should put this series to rest, especially after David Niven's demise.
The D.I.

More terse machismo from Jack Webb, this time at Marine boot camp. (M.W.)

Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
Ron Howard's movie version of Dan Brown's novel, in which a Harvard professor (Tom Hanks) and a Parisian cryptographer (Audrey Tautou) try to track down the Holy Grail, fails to get a decent spook going. Howard has illustrated the book beautifully, but he hasn't made it his own. (K.W.)

Wes Anderson combines whimsy and melancholy in a tale about a broken family, but this time the formula may have let him down. Set aboard a train that’s crawling across India, the film is about three brothers (Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman) who’ve lost contact with one another. (K.W.)

Glossy W.W.I "triangle" soaper by Irving Thalberg's favorite director, Sidney Franklin.
The Dark Command

A slightly fantastical re-creation of Quantrill's Raiders - but nobody can make a Western tear along like Raoul Walsh.
The Dark Corner
Released: 1946
Rated:

Good film noir about a plucky secretary and a trumped-up murder charge. (M.W.)
The Dark Crystal
Released: 1982
Rated: PG

The Dark Knight
Released: 2008
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
"Dark" is the operative word in this sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, which has a very conflicted Batman (Christian Bale) going to extraordinary lengths to destroy the Joker (Heath Ledger), who likes to blow things up for the hell of it. Ledger's mangy-dog performance delves so deeply into the banality of evil that he almost eclipses everybody around him, but the movie deserves to be taken seriously as an investigation into how far we should go to get the bad guys. Sound relevant? (K.W.)
The Dark Knight Rises
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In Christopher Nolan's final, beautifully written Batman film, despotism descends on Gotham, and billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has turned recluse. This may be the darkest summer popcorn movie ever. (M.J.)

Apocalyptic science fiction: Nuclear tests send the earth plummeting toward the sun, and mankind begins to fry for its sins. It's probably better than On The Beach.

In a remake of the sci-fi classic, Keanu Reeves is the interplanetary potential destroyer and/or savior of all mankind. This loud, hammy and, above all, pointless do-over only serves to point out the genius of the original. (M.S.)
