The Dresser
Released: 1984
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The volatile, symbolic relationship between an aging, raging Shakespearean ham (modeled on Sit Donald Wolfit) and his fussy, epicene dresser as they tour the British provincial theaters in wartime. Adapted by Ronald Harwood from his play, this is a real actors' showcase. It's admired by many, but I find the acting of both Courtenay (re-creating his stage role) and Finney a little forced. (It's a pity that, for whatever reason, Laurence Olivier didn''t play Sir.)
The Driver
Released: 1978
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
All action, little talk in an "existential parable" about a superb getaway driver pitted against a ruthless cop who wants nothing more than to bring the "cowboy desperado" to heel. The chase scenes are exciting; but the terse, "Hemingwayesque" dialogue verges on self-parody.(M.W.)
The Drop
Released: 2014

When a bartender (Tom Hardy) is robbed, a righteous Catholic detective (John Ortiz) shows up to investigate. The film falls just shy of genuine neo-noir nastiness, but the performances are strong, particularly James Gandolfini as the bar’s Mob-plagued owner. (M.S.)
The Duchess
Released: 2008
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In this incredibly opulent costume/historical drama, Keira Knightley stars as Georgiana Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire, who ruled over late-18th-century English social life with her wit, charm, beauty and sense of fashion but was treated like a glorified sperm receptacle by her dullard of a husband (Ralph Fiennes). That’s certainly a paradox worth building a movie around, but The Duchess is only partially successful at doing so, reducing this most accomplished and complex woman to a long-suffering martyr. (K.W.)

Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13

A Roman general (Channing Tatum) arrives in Caledonia to solve the mystery of his father, who commanded a legion of centurions who disappeared there along with their totemic medal eagle. Not much vitality in this old-fashioned boys' adventure tale. (M.B.)
The Eagle Has Landed
Released: 1977

John Sturges does what almost seems a weird variation on his best movie, The Great Escape. This time a group of Nazi commandos are trying to break into Britain, to kidnap Churchill. Exciting, in a vacuous, boy's-adventure way.
The Earrings of Madame de...
Released: 1953
Rated: NR

Max Ophuls’ 1953 classic finds a general’s wife selling the earrings he gave her to pay off gambling debts.
The East

While working to infiltrate an ecoterrorism cell, an undercover agent (Brit Marling) wins over the leader (Alexander Skarsgård) but makes another member (Ellen Page) suspicious. The cinematography looks sharp, but the radical characters seem interchangeable. (M.B.)

The Emigrant Saga

A family of impoverished 19th century Swedish farmers forsakes their old land for the new: the shores of America and its Midwestern heartland. The trek is long, the promise limitless, the rewards ambiguous and sometimes tragic. Based on Wilhelm Moburg's epic novel (often compared to Knut Hamsun's contemporary Norwegian saga Growth of the Soil), this is one of the only great recent Swedish films not by Ingmar Bergman (albeit with some of his stock company). The film is both vast and intimate, brutal and lyrical; its poetic visuals are honed with a documentary edge. Much of the location photography for the American scenes was done in and near Wisconsin, including one scene at North Freedom and others near Baraboo.

Duel to the death between the A-Number-One Hobo and his nemesis, a homicidal train-detective named Shack. Another Aldrich slambanger, with an unfortunately portentous script. Keith Carradine's "apprentice hobo" is excruciating.
