The Fallen Idol
Released: 1949
Rated:

The Fallen Idol has more low-angle shots than almost any other film you could name, including Citizen Kane. And there's a reason: Throughout the movie, we constantly follow the viewpoint of a 9-year old boy, son of the ambassador at the French embassy in London, who has come to suspect his best friend, the embassy butler, of murder. A real tour de force, ingeniously written by Graham Greene, ingeniously shot by Carol Reed (it's sort of a warm-up for their next film, The Third Man) and brilliantly acted. The tension does not let up until the very last second.

The Family

A mafia clan struggle to adapt to a conventional life when the witness protection program places them in France. Though this film nods to Scorsese classics like Goodfellas, it is devoid of morality, playing like a videogame with a high body count. (S.D.)
The Family Jewels

Jerry Lewis, at the point where he lost his American audience almost completely, and was most fervently embraced by the French film intelligentsia. It's another of his multiple-role outings: as seven potential guardians of a winsome orphan due for a huge inheritance. Frantic slapstick and sentimentality, in that old style Jean-Luc Godard described as "austere and comic."
The Family Man

Stars Nicolas Cage as Jack Campbell, a Manhattan-penthouse Master of the Universe who's about to be transported to another universe altogether.

Writer-director Tyler Perry chronicles an enduring friendship between two very different women (Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard) who embark on a cross-country trip and fancy themselves a middle-aged Thelma and Louise. Unfortunately, the soap opera shenanigans of their offspring significantly detract from that otherwise interesting relationship. (S.D.)

This is a Gary Coleman vehicle, with a "Walter Mitty" plot line, helmed by the director of the old "Batman" TV series. Don't say you weren't warned.

The Swedish maid who conquers Congress - its hearts and then its halls. A pleasant romantic comedy, for which the beauteous Ms. Young (in a role obviously intended for Ingrid Bergman) won a surprising Oscar.

Cancer looms over a teen couple's (Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort) relationship in this drama based on John Green's gorgeous novel. This is a gentle love story rather than an anthemic romance, one that shows what a privilege it is to love someone. (K.J.)

A former boxer in Lowell, Mass. (Christian Bale) trains his younger brother (Mark Wahlberg) to be a champion. Flawless performances and direction by David O. Russell make this a brilliant movie about self-delusions and inner strength. (M.B.)

Warner Brothers' "Irish Mafia"--who were usually trading bullets in some pasteboard gangster Valhalla - join forces for something a little closer to home: a tribute to the Famed World War I All-Erin Shamrock regiment. I like Bill Keighley, but it's a crying shame Raoul Walsh didn't do this one.
