The third version of Tennessee Williams' first play, Battle of Angels, with its decadent drifter in a snakeskin jacket strumming his guitar and driving women mad in a sultry Southern hamlet. Carries Williams' themes and style almost to parody, but the cast is great.

From John Farris' thriller about teenagers with "wild talents" and the spider web of corrupt schemes to exploit them. Pretty mindless - but De Palma directs it with stunning, blood-drenched, terrifying virtuosity. Most of The Fury should have you on the edge of your chair.

Some Busby Berkeley buffs regard this as the maestro's finest hour, a trash masterpiece of the first order (it contains the legendary number with Carmen Miranda and the dancing bananas). Garish, crazy and mind-boggling; if it doesn't top Berkeley's Footlight Parade, at least it nuzzles down next to it.
The Garden of Allah

Trappist monk meets a sultry temptress in the burning desert - and casts his fate to the winds. Post-Sternberg Dietrich; but she still knows how to fry her prey amidst decadent splendor. (M.W.)
The Garden of Finzi-Continis
Released: 1971
Rated:

The Finzi-Continis are a family of wealthy, patrician Italian Jews, who live behind a high wall on a grandiose estate. Outside, the Fascists roam the streets. Mussolini's basso profundo screams for radios and loudspeakers. Jews are being harassed and beaten. But inside, in the lavishly appointed boudoirs, the festive dining halls, and in the glorious, evanascently-colored garden, bathed in limpid sunlight; inside, behind that wall, nothing can harm them...or so they think. Based on Giorgio Bassani's novel, this magnificent film covers, in microcosm, the same subject as the recent TV drama, "Holocaust," and is far superior.

Ewan McGregor is hired to write the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) in Roman Polanski's political mystery thriller. There isn't the complexity or breadth of such stunners as Chinatown or The Pianist, but this is a solidly crafted little roundelay of intrigue with a veracity that seems torn from newspaper headlines. (M.B.)
