Robert Anderson's drama of a sensitive youth, suspected of homosexuality, whose headmaster's wife tells him: "Years from now, when you speak of this - and you will - be kind." Cleaned up in typical '50s fashion - about which, years from then, it is difficult to feel kind at all.

Seth MacFarlane (The Family Guy) directs this story of a miraculous talking teddy bear and his human, 35-year-old best friend forever (Mark Wahlberg). It’s yet another man-child buddy movie, but the script is packed with MacFarlane's gleefully coarse wit. (M.S.)

Mitchell Lichtenstein’s attempt at tongue-in-cheek exploitation features a saving-it-for-marriage virgin (Jess Weixler) whose vagina, unbeknownst to her, contains teeth. It’s a provocative idea, and Lichtenstein uses it to send a message about female empowerment, but this gory movie can’t think of anything to do except bring on another victim. (K.W.)

Less a whodunit than a whodunwhat, this French thriller from director Guillaume Canet combines elements of Vertigo and The Fugitive in its story about a Parisian pediatrician (François Cluzet) who still hasn’t gotten over the murder of his wife eight years ago, then gets a mysterious email, seemingly from her. We're left largely in the dark until one of those lengthy final-scene confessions, but the movie actually does a masterful job of doling out information. (K.W.)

Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here
Released: 1969
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Willie Boy, a Paiute Indian, becomes enmeshed in a huge early 1900s Arizona manhunt when he kills his lover's father and flees with her into the desert. The motivations are political: Willie Boy, the symbol of rebellion, must be crushed - particularly since President Taft is touring the area. This harrowing story, based on fact, is told from the angle of two characters: the defiant, desperate Willie, and the Conscience-stricken sheriff who has to track him down. Despite casting errors, this is a great, powerful Western. Director-writer Abraham Polonsky made it after spending nearly two decades on Hollywood's blacklists.
Tempest
Released: 1982
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Paul Mazursky refashions Shakespeare's great play into a contemporary comedy-psychodrama about a misanthropic Manhattan architect who flees to an idyllic Greek Island with his teenage daughter and mistress. Raul Julia plays an insanely engaging Caliban - a slovenly, lecherous Greek handyman - to Cassavetes' brooding Propero and Sarandon's knockout Ariel. It's an odd little paradise: nothing to eat by leta cheese and little to do but muse or caper in the dancing sunlight. The architect's wife, however, now the mistress of a big-time racketeer, pursues him there to reclaim their daughter. And, as their boat approaches, a mysterious storm springs up...Lovely, quirky, beautifully acted by everyone, full of oddball jeux d'esprits (the goat dance to "New York, New York"), sparkling magic and wistful high spirits. This is a neglected little masterpiece, one of the few recent American movies that at its best reminds you of the romances and fancies of Jean Renoir or Rene Clair.
