Despite a bottomless reserve of cynical, scattershot humor, this comedy is a swift-moving equal-opportunity offender about a team of used-car liquidators hired to save a dealership from bankruptcy with a blowout sale. Jeremy Piven as the chief liquidator provides much of the energy. (M.B.)

An Italian writer (Toni Servillo) who found fame and fortune early in his career grows bored with high society. The views of Rome are often spectacular, but the plot is too loose and the gags are confusing rather than amusing. (K.B.)
The Great Buck Howard

A law-school dropout (Colin Hanks) works as tour manager for an aging stage magician (John Malkovich) modeled on the Amazing Kreskin. The film suffers in the cartoonishness of some of its subsidiary characters, but Malkovich is beguilingly strange. (K.B.)

Denzel Washington directs and stars in the true story of a professor who establishes an all-black debate team in the Jim Crow-era South. Washington does a creditable job, but the film follows a standard inspirational-movie structure in which the underdogs fight their way to success. (M.B.)

The Great Gatsby
Released: 1974
Rated:
Now Playing? No
This movie was a legendary critical fiasco...and I wonder why, It's true that Mia Farrow is somewhat miscast as Daisy Buchanan, and that Gatsby is more a Jack Nicholson type than a Robert Redford. But, forgetting that, this is a faithful, careful and sometimes stunning adaptation of Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel about West Egg and the Hill of Ashes and the Eye and a sublimely romantic young climber, at play in the cruel and dangerous Elysian fields of the rich. The critics were wrong: This movie isn't perfect, but it's good. And, by the way, if you haven't read Gatsby, do so immediately. It didn't get very good reviews either.
