The Golden Age of Buster Keaton
Released: 1978
Rated:

The favorite comedian of both Frederic Garcia Lorca and Samuel Beckett, one of the true geniuses of the silent film - in a compilation of scenes from his greatest period. Here is the matchlessly eloquent James Agee with a few words about Buster: "No other comedian could do as much with the dead pan". He used this great sad, motionless face to suggest various related things: a one-track mind near the track's end of pure insanity, mulish imperturbability under the wildest of circumstances, how a dead a human being can get and still be alive, an awe-inspiring sort of patience and power to endure, proper to granite but uncanny in flesh and blood...Perhaps because of his "dry" wit, there are people who never cared much for Keaton. Those who do cannot care mildly.

Philip Pullman's anti-religious young-adult book has been watered down in this cinematic adaptation, which comes up with some jaw-dropping visuals but loses track of the things that really matter in a fantasy epic: story and characters. Still, Dakota Blue Richards is delightful as the rambunctious girl who will save the world from a repressive dictatorship. (K.W.)

Based on one of Frank Yerby's ubiquitous '50s bestsellers. Yerby, though his race was discreetly concealed at the time, was one of America's first universally popular black writers. The film is full of lusty rogues, fiery damsels, cutthroats and slugabeds, all wining and wassailing and swashing and buckling back in the 17th century Caribbean. Heave ho!..

The following day, Emperor Luhois (Otto Gebuhr) bans Loew's people from Prague, prompting the rabbi to build a statue, known as the Golem (Paul Wegener), that he hopes to animate as a savior. Brought to life by an evil spirit, Astaroth, the creature is, at first, gentle and compassionate. That, however, quickly changes as the creature goes insane. (TMS)
