The Happening
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
M. Night Shyamalan’s story of an airborne toxin that’s causing people to spontaneously kill themselves is like a B-movie without the trash element, the sense of fun. And Mark Wahlberg, as a regular-guy science teacher who slowly – very slowly – figures out what’s going on, doesn’t help things, mostly because he’s been given absolutely nothing to play. (K.W.)

Splashy musical tribute to restaurateur and railroad concessionaire Fred Harvey and his conquest of the West, highlighted by one mind-boggling production number, "The Atchinson, Topeka, and the Santa Fe." George Sidney made the most popular of the "Golden Age" MGM musicals - though, next to Donen and Minnelli, his work today seems brassy, loud and slightly dumb.(M.W.)

The titular teen (Haley Bennett) confronts family skeletons in this frighteningly dull updating of The Omen and Rosemary's Baby for the "Gossip Girl" set. Given the possibilities for high school evils (mortal, venal, and pretty much any other kind you can think of), it's downright depressing how uninspired this turns out to be. (M.S.)
The Have and Have Not

The first 15 minutes are pure Hemingway, straight from the novel; the rest is a reprise of Casablanca filtered through the subtle sensibility of scenarist William Faulkner. As if that weren't enough, Howard Hawk's direction is his very best: crisp, laconic, suavely humane and full of humor - and the marvelous cast is topped by Bogart and the 19-year old smoky voiced ingenue with whom he fell in love, Lauren Bacall. This is a great American movie; it makes you feel wonderful no matter how many times you see it.
