Tempest
Released: 1982

Paul Mazursky refashions Shakespeare's great play into a contemporary comedy-psychodrama about a misanthropic Manhattan architect who flees to an idyllic Greek Island with his teenage daughter and mistress. Raul Julia plays an insanely engaging Caliban - a slovenly, lecherous Greek handyman - to Cassavetes' brooding Propero and Sarandon's knockout Ariel. It's an odd little paradise: nothing to eat by leta cheese and little to do but muse or caper in the dancing sunlight. The architect's wife, however, now the mistress of a big-time racketeer, pursues him there to reclaim their daughter. And, as their boat approaches, a mysterious storm springs up...Lovely, quirky, beautifully acted by everyone, full of oddball jeux d'esprits (the goat dance to "New York, New York"), sparkling magic and wistful high spirits. This is a neglected little masterpiece, one of the few recent American movies that at its best reminds you of the romances and fancies of Jean Renoir or Rene Clair.

Ten Days' Wonder
Released: 1972
Rated:

Claude Chabrol's adaptation of the complex Ellery Queen thriller set in mythical "Wrightsville," a weird amalgam of Biblical allegory, murder mystery and modern Oedipus saga. Richly styled, full of inside references (mostly to Citizen Kane, Arkadin and Psycho), a compelling example of the French fascination with American popular culture.

The self-proclaimed â??greatest rock band in the worldâ? (Jack Black, Kyle Gass) search for a magical guitar pick. This feature-length comedy has the amiable feel of the duoâ??s early, odder HBO shorts, but it doesnâ??t hit the highest bizarro notes that fans are used to. (M.S.)
Tender Comrade
Released: 1943
Rated:

A preachy soap opera, from an early Dalton Trumbo screenplay, about female factory workers on the W.W.II home front. James Agee called it "one of the god-damndest things ever seen," "a textbook and a treat for the hardiest misogynists," and "the most richly dreadful and fascinating of recent films...At the end, Ginger Rogers subjects a defenseless baby to a speech which lasts 24 hours and five minutes by my watch, and which...in its fantastic promises of a better world to come, is one of the most nauseating things I have ever sat through." How many chances do you get to see a movie which provokes a knock as eloquent as that? (M.W.)
Tender is the Night
Released: 1962

Variable adaptation of Scott Fitzgerald's great novel - of Dick Diver and Nicole, of love and madness, of golden days that turn to shadow on the Cote d'Azur. The last film in which David Selznick had much say - though most of his suggestions were ignored.

Low-key, poetic study of an alcoholic country music has been trying to recover from the turbulent wreckage of his life. John Connor (Christian Bale) commands a global resistance against the self-aware machines of SkyNet and their killer cyborgs, the Terminators. The film is terrifically dull, lacking any sense of good old summer matinee fun. (M.S.)

A film based on Larry McMurty's novel about cross-generational conflicts in a modern Texas family, well written and directed by TV sitcom specialist James Brooks ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"). The movie is basically a TV sitcom tearjerker as well, but it has wit and compassion, the cast is excellent, and one of Brook's own inventions (a middle-aged romance between Shirley MacLaine as a domineering widow and Jack Nicholson as a lewd, potbellied astronaut) is done with beguiling flair and brilliance.

In the rancid, boggy flatlands outside Copenhagen, an exiled police officer (Jakob Cedergren) is reassigned to watch over a town of eccentrics. This noirish, strange and often very funny Danish comedy is augmented by comically morose art direction and downright dire locations. (M.S.)
