A sheltered valley - an island of tranquility in the Thirty Years' War - becomes a philosophical and romantic battleground. Written and directed by novelist James (Shogun, Noble House) Clavell, and perhaps the most interesting of his films, though its financial failure shoved him back into literature.

In Larry Fessenden's psychological horror movie about the effects of global warming, an advance team of oil-company workers stakes out Alaska for possible drilling sites, but it isn't long before people start acting kind of strange. The movie isn't particularly scary on a gut level, but intellectually it's as scary as hell. (K.W.)

The Learning Tree
Released: 1969
Rated:

Gordon Parks' adaptation of his own autobiographical novel about his Kansas childhood. Totally different from the standard '60s-early '70s black film: humane, serious, realistic, gentle and idealistic. A wonderful movie.
The Left-Handed Gun
Released: 1958
Rated:

The role had been intended for James Dean, and Paul Newman wound up playing Billy the Kid in this movie as a lively, instinctual, tormented adolescent very much in the Dean mold. The most Freudian of Westerns (taken from a TV play by Gore Vidal, who had tried to make Euripides his model), it is brutal and lyrical. (M.W.)

Deceived by his stepfather, the ruler of Greece, and then forced into slavery, a man (Kellan Lutz) uses all his might to reclaim his rightful place in the kingdom. The plot is ridiculous, the action scenes are uninteresting, and Lutz is far too pretty to portray an ancient bad-ass. (L.B.)

The Leopard
Released: 1963

A sumptuous adaptation of Guiseppe de Lampedusa's great novel: a study of the decaying fortunes of a family of Sicilian aristocrats. No one is better at this kind of subject than Luchino Visconti - an aristocrat himself, a Marxist, and the possessor of the kind of full blown operatic sensibility that seems to belong to a vanished epoch.

William Wyler's last film: a dark, pessimistic study of racial relations in the South, with an extremely bitter climax. Like all Wyler's work, well-cast, handsomely mounted, smoothly done with the polish of the technique reflecting oddly on the despairing subject.
