The reclamation of a would be child molester. A well-meant, liberal "message" picture: Pauline Kael wondered "Could a movie that really dealt with a sex drive toward children be in such unoffending good taste?" (M.W.)

The Marriage of Maria Braun
Released: 1977
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Postwar Germany's slide into bourgeois decadence, as exemplified by the rise of Maria Braun, who wants only to be reunited with her husband, and who achieves something quite different. While he was alive, this was Werner Fassbinder's most popular film in his native Germany. Typically, its a Sirkian "soap opera" with striking political and psychological undercurrents.
The Marrying Kind
Released: 1952
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon take an appealingly off-slant look at a lower-middle class marriage in New York City: the charming, bristling union of a stocky postal worker and his ingratiating "dish" of a wife. This is a deceptively light movie, and not a very well known one, but it's superb. With an especially powerful performance from that ebullient, magnificent actress Judy Holliday.
The Mask
Released: 1961
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Cheapshop horror about a deadly mask that induces homicidal mania and 3-D hallucinations in all who wear it. The 3-D scenes are by Slavko Vorkapich, legendary visual prestidigitator of Hollywood in the '30s.
The Mask of Dimitrios

Now Playing? No
The transcontinental search by a mystery novelist for a scoundrelly black marketer and international criminal. Good film noir, taken from the early Eric Ambler thriller A Coffin For Dimitrios. (M.W.)
The Mask of Zorro

Whether thrusting his sword, cracking his whip or flying through the air with the greatest of ease, Zorro has always been the most athletic of cinema's superheroes.
The Master

A troubled drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) becomes enamored with the charismatic leader of a cult-like religious movement (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Phoenix and Hoffman give near-perfect performances while exploring human nature's ferocious side. (S.R.)

In a fit of conscience, a New Orleans-based assassin (Jason Statham) agrees to mentor his own mentor's son not long after killing said Mentor the Elder (Donald Sutherland). Sadly, precious little of Statham's innate self-referencing charisma is on display in this half-baked remake. (M.S.)

Julie Harris was in her thirties when she played Carson McCullers' frantic 14-year old Frankie McAdams, but it remains one of the most affecting performances by an American actress. A sensitive, fine-nerved Southern drama, with icy veins of Gothic horror running just under the surface.

A journalist (Ewan McGregor) in Iraq bumps into the story of a lifetime, the Army's experiments in the paranormal. Too many tiny blunders keep this from being a triumph, but George Clooney's psychic-spy performance is deceptively layered, and there is pleasure in the cockeyed point of view. (K.J.)
