The Patricia Neal Story
Released: 1981
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The real-life story of actress Patricia Neal's struggle to recover following a stroke and of the support of her husband, writer Ronald Dahl. Inspiring, even when you recall that Dahl was cheating on Neal (and would eventually leave her) even as this tribute to them was being filmed.

The Pawnbroker
Released: 1965
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Edward Lewis Wallant's compassionate novel of a Nazi death-camp survivor now operating a ghetto pawnshop, fashioned - via all sorts of elliptic time and editing devices - onto a sort of "Harlem, Mon Amour". The script is the problem here, but this portrayal of an emotionally cauterized human being forced back into world of pain and suffering has some great moments. The greatest of all is Juano Hernandez' withering, devastating cameo as the old man who "just wants to talk."

The Perils of Pauline

Our old buddy, the late, great George Marshall, gives us the (supposed) low-down on the halcyon, hazard-strewn days of Pearl White and the eternal heroine-tied -to- the- tracks, mustchioed-villain, continued-next- week cliff-hanger serial. George was around back them, so he really should know better. (M.W.)
The Perks of Being a Wallflower

In this adaptation of director Stephen Chbosky’s best-selling novel, a damaged beauty (Emma Watson) and her bullied gay stepbrother (Ezra Miller) help a teen loner (Logan Lerman) find his calling as a writer. The film’s best stretches capture the electrifying sensation an outcast feels when he finds a crowd to run with. (K.J.)

Maxwell Anderson's metaphoric tragedy about the triumph of American barbarism in a besieged truckstop. Not as good as its reputation, but the role of the sardonic murderer, Duke Mantee, made a star of Humphrey Bogart.
