In this documentary, Iranian director and dissident Jafar Panahi muses on art and politics as he describes a film the government kept him from making. It's a strange, stunning, deceptively low-key act of defiance. (K.B.)

This is the Army
Released: 1943
Rated:

The alumni of Irving Berlin's World War I Army show, "Yip Yip Yaphank" reunite to help stage an all new World War II extravaganza - which includes Kate Smith warbling "God Bless America, " Joe Louis saluting the flag before a regiment of Harlem zoot-suiters; Ronald Reagan barking backstage orders (this time, FDR upstages him); an unnerving number of "drag" acts (performed by the original Army cast itself); and Berlin himself plaintively wailing , "Oh, How I Hate To Get Up In the Morning!" (Perhaps they were showing him the rushes.) Since stars Murphy and Reagan later becomes, respectively U.S. Senator, Governor, and President, this movie has obviously become the ultimate in chauvinist camp - as witness the stirring finale, with the crowd roaring, the curtain descending and the entire cast marching off to War.

Cabin fever and dwindling supplies threaten to destroy a group of friends (Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco) trapped in a house together after cataclysmic events devastate Los Angeles. Despite a questionable comedy strategy and a messy approach to storycraft, much of this film is wildly entertaining. (M.B.)

CIA agents (Tom Hardy, Chris Pine) set out to win over a hot babe (Reese Witherspoon) using all the professional and technological resources at their disposal. Director McG's film just barrels ahead, not exciting enough to work as a thrill ride, or funny enough to work as a simple comedy. (S.R.)

Grim, relentless, downbeat, utterly uncompromising portrayal of British rugby, a callous star, and his entrapment in a world of commerce and corruption. Definitely one of the best films ever made on sports - in fact, one of the few great ones. (M.W.)

A space viking from Marvel's Avengers clan (Chris Hemsworth) must rescue his girlfriend (Natalie Portman) -- and the rest of the universe -- when she stumbles upon something that could make a villain (Christopher Eccleston) into a king. With too many screenwriters, this film should be a mess, yet it floats along on its own sheer madness and wraps up with an ingenious showdown. (M.J.)
