Tobacco Road
Released: 1941
Rated:

John Ford's bizarre, shaggily amusing follow-up to The Grapes of Wrath (on which he and scenarist Nunnally Johnson had collaborated the year before). Charley Grapewin - great as Grandpa Joad in Grapes - here plays the roughly similar Jeeter Lester, a Georgia redneck who's an imperviously lazy and dissolute sharecropper. Tobacco Road tends to deflate where The Grapes of Wrath exalted; it shows us a similar milieu, a similar journey by car, and similar impoverished desperation, but here the emphasis is on rough-hewn slapstick, and the cynical social observations of novelist Erkine Caldwell (minus Caldwell's famous sexual frankness, which is what made the novel and play popular in the first place). Yet, Ford, much as he seems to relish Jeeter's roguishness, paradoxically lavishes all his skill for elegiac composition on Tobacco Road. The climactic sequence is one of the most poetic in his entire oeuvre.

Tokyo!
Released: 2009
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
This triptych of short films set in Tokyo is both a splendid head trip and a gorgeous mess. Leos Carax directs a riff on Godzilla, Michel Gondry a whimsical romance, and Bong Joon-ho a tale of an obsessive-compulsive agoraphobic. (M.S.)
Tom Brown's School Days
Released: 1940
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Fast times at Rugby High, from the persistent classic of British scholastics.
Tom Horn
Released: 1979
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Another "noble outlaw" Western, given some added depth and sting by one of Tom (92 in the Shade) McGuane's rare screenplays. This was McQueen's next-to-last movie - he was dying of cancer when he made it - and, in some ways, it's a fitting valedictory.
Tom Jones
Released: 1963
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Henry Fielding's irrepressible foundling wines and wassails and fondles and fornicates across half of England while a monumental collection of wenches, buffoons, highwaymen, whores, rogues, alcoholics and disgracefully misbehaving lords and ladies come tumbling after him. A very popular, high-spirited almost too frenetic adaptation of the great picaresque novel (the style is Hogarth and the Royal Court crossed with "The Goon Show") in which Tony Richardson and associates seem determined to blow the whole tradition of understated British "quality" sky high.
Tom Thumb
Released: 1958
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Slightly coy, but often charming, inventive musical from the Grimm Brothers fairy tale. Pal's special effects are ingenious and Peter Sellers and Terry Thomas give the sugary proceedings an unexpected shot of satire as two roguish and wittily excessive villains.
Tom, Dick and Harry
Released: 1941
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Blithe little comedy about a woman unable to choose among three wildly dissimilar suitors. An early success from Garson Kanin's bizarre film directorial career (it collapsed after he hit 30).
Tomb of Ligeia
Released: 1965
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
The most lurid, splashy, and obsessive of Corman's Edgar Allen Poe adaptations; the subject - as scripted by "Chinatown's" Robert Towne - is the sweet lyricism of death.

Tommy
Released: 1975
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Ken Russell's movie of the Who's famous rock opera is, as you might expect, wildly excessive. This is definitely one of the loudest movies - aurally, visually and even philosophically - ever made.
Tommy Boy
Released: 1995
Rated: PG-13

Tomorrow if Forever
Released: 1946

Another variation on Enoch Arden (the husband who returns from the dead causing trouble galore among the living), with a little Wellesian hamming to pump it up. (M.W.)

Tony Manero

In Augusto Pinochet's Chile, a nightclub choreographer (Alfredo Castro) models his habits on Saturday Night Fever -- and murders casually. Fascinating, bleak satire of a regime that also murdered casually. (K.B.)

Too Late Blues
Released: 1961
Rated:

Early Cassavetes in a smoky, fatalistic jazz ini lieu. (M.W.)
Too Late the Hero
Released: 1971
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A riff of sorts on the Bill Holden sections of The Bridge Over The River Kwai - but nothing in that film is as exciting as the last 10 minutes here. (M.W.)
Too Many Girls
Released: 1940
Rated:
Now Playing? No
One of the handful of film assignments taken by the protean Broadway hitmaker, George Abbott. This was also the movie on which RKO's rampaging redhead, Lucille Ball, met a young Cuban bandleader named Desi Arnaz - whose first words on seeing her are supposed to have been: "Wow! Thass a honk of woman!"
