The Band Wagon
Released: 1953
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
An aging Hollywood hoofer, elegant but slightly down-at-the-heels tries for a Broadway comeback. His vehicle; a simple little musical that its director - a Mephistophelean "Boy Wonder" modeled affectionately after Orson Welles - has transmuted into a modern-day "Faust." A breezy, luscious musical; it contains the original routine to "That's Entertainment!" which becomes something of a personal statement for screenwriters Comden and Green. And, of course, all Astaire's numbers are splendid
The Band's Visit

A band associated with an Egyptian police force take a wrong turn into an Israeli town, where music becomes a lifeline between the two cultures. It sounds like a setup for a feel-good fish-out-of-water story, but the film succeeds by focusing on loneliness and human detachment, two issues that transcend borders. (J.R.)

In 1971, low-rent thieves dug into the vault at Lloyd’s Bank in London and raided the safe-deposit boxes. This dramatization blends the daring of the bank-heist genre with the dread of the political-paranoia genre, exploring a universe of police corruption, financial malfeasance and sexual degeneracy. (J.R.)

There are five or six key indispensable turning points in cinema history, and this is one of them: 27-year-old Sergei Eisenstein's blazing recreation of the mutiny aboard the S.S. Pomtemkin, and the answering massacre of the rebel sailors' supporters in the port of Odessa by Czarist troops...Half a century after its release, "Potemkin" remains as explosive and thrilling as ever; and its showpiece sequence - the massacre on the Odessa Steps - is still a horrifying, stirring masterpiece: History etched in blood.
