The struggles of a tyro English teacher in the madhouse of a New York City high school - against overcrowding, violence, the cynicism of her colleagues, the apathy of her students. Based on the real-life experiences of Bel Kaufman, the film is keyed mostly to humor and sentiment; it's too pat, but it touches you anyway.

By focusing on two teenagers employed by a cruise boat that takes Western tourists up and down the Yangtze River near the gargantuan Three Gorges Dam, Chinese-Canadian documentarian Yung Chang shows us what's behind the smile that China has been presenting to the rest of the world. The movie's so beautfilly shot and edited that you wonder whether these are truly candid moments we're seeing, but life on the boat is nevertheless a fascinating East-meets-West crossroads where neither side is clearly understood by the other. (K.W.)
