A struggling lawyer and high school wrestling coach (Paul Giamatti) defrauds an elderly man with dementia (Burt Young), then takes in the old man's teenage grandson (Alex Shaffer). This enjoyable dramedy, only kinda-sorta a sports movie, works, thanks partly to a great supporting cast. (K.B.)

Winchester 73

Prepared by Fritz Lang, who turned over directorial reigns to Mann before production, this is one of the classic Westerns of the '50s: the brisk, violent beautifully landscaped saga of a stolen rifle that passes from hand to hand, with its original owner in hot pursuit.

It is 1905. Deep in the Florida everglades, a group of wild, raffish swamp tramps - led by the irrepressible "Cottonmouth" - are hunting down and slaughtering flocks of wild egrets, selling the elegant feathers to the ladies of the towns and cities. One man takes exception to the slaughter: a nature studies teacher named Walt Murdock. And he mounts a determined campaign to stop it. But as Murdock and Cottonmouth will both discover, morality can be as fluid and treacherous as the dank, mucky swamp water, and the battle between "civilization" and "wilderness" is never an easy one to call. Nick Ray fell ill before finishing this film, but it's one of his most beautiful, strange and moving works: a savage, despairing poem, and a plea for ecology a decade before its time.

This glib, unpleasant documentary tracks down Jack Rebney, an unwitting YouTube star on the strength of his obscene tirades in outtakes from a 1980s RV marketing film. The film gestures at insight but mostly just condescends to its subject. (K.B.)
Winnie the Pooh

The topic is Eeyore's missing tail, but this pleasantly discursive story flits to and fro, giving each indelible character a moment. The spirit of A.A. Milne's stories and Disney's endearing screen adaptations -- their gentle soul -- has been sweetly preserved. (K.J.)

Good, serious drama about an aging race-car driver trying to make sense of his life. Working on this movie, Paul Newman developed the fascination with racing that eventually led him to a new career and, eventually, the U.S.A. championship. (M.W.)

In poverty-stricken rural Missouri, a 17-year-old girl (Jennifer Lawrence) tries to track down her father, a meth cooker on the lam. Striking photography and a moving performance by Lawrence make this film haunting and vivid. (K.B.)

After a beautiful young woman (Jessica Brown Findlay) dies in his arms, a burglar (Colin Farrell) discovers that he might be able to reincarnate her. If you haven't read the book that spawned this movie's script, prepare to be confused and annoyed by the weak narrative. (M.S.)

Maxwell Anderson's allegorical verse drama about a tormented young man seeking his father's murderers. (The inspiration is clearly the Sacco-Vanzetti case.) An interesting, if not inspired, period piece; Meredith, however (in the role that made him a star), is intense and brilliant.
