The only one of Chaplin's silent features in which he himself didn't star; in many ways, it;s one of the most influential films he ever directed. This sophisticated tale of careless love among the gentry and their "inferiors" in Paris helped work a marked change in the style of Ernst Lubitsch and (through him) most of the rest of the world's cinema as well. Watching this film, in which Chaplin's mastery of the camera and cinematic storytelling is not enhanced by his acting, you see how near the mark Jean Renoir was when he cited "Charlot" as the greatest of all film directors.

One of Peter Bogdanovich's guilty secrets: handed a Russian sf movie by Roger Corman, he was asked to cut in footage of bikini-clad space women and somehow contrive a plot. By necessity, his earthlings and aliens never communicate onscreen. Experiences like this are what drive filmmakers to drink.

Homosexuality from the inside...A San Francisco based documentary team interview dozens of homosexuals from all sections of the country and every conceivable background. The film, surprisingly, emphasizes diversity; there is no way to pigeonhole, or dismiss, any of these people - and the points are made quietly, with, for the most part, no overt editorializing. Fascinating and humane; and certainly one of the best documentaries made on an often over-sensationalized subject. (M.W.)

Keeping mum on your journalistic sources. The director - Mel Danski, is married to ex-UW antiwar activist, Eleanor Pullen, whom you may remember from The War At Home. (M.W.)
