What to Expect When You're Expecting
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13

This old-fashioned comedy about the modern baby-making experience crams in a lot of famous people (Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz) to enact types rather than full-blooded characters. Still, the actors do good work, and the film is mildly funny. (K.J.)

What's New Pussycat?
Released: 1965

"What's new, pussycat? used to be Warren Beatty's favorite salutation, and Woody Allen based this screenplay - his first - on Beatty's erotic adventures, juxtaposing them with his own endless frustrations. Somewhere along the line, Peter O'Toole replace Beatty; Peter Sellers began wildly expanding his role of a lecherous, crazed psychiatrist; and the film went insanely out of control. Allen - a serious sort - doesn't like the result, but I do.

Peter Bogdanovich's attempt to revive the spirit of Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth and It Happened One Night...and he very nearly succeeds. A fast, punchy screwball comedy, smoking with slapstick, and more plot complications than Ben Hecht could shake a swizzle stick at. The Kenneth Mars character, incidentally, is a vicious - and totally intentional - caricature of film critic John Simon.

Anna Faris employs the detective skills of neighbor Chris Evans to track down previous boyfriends who might be worth a second look. Faris and Evans make for an appealing pair, but too many of the farcical situations fall flat. (S.R.)

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Released: 1962
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Blanche and Baby Jane Hudson are a pair of retired film stars living in the polyethlene hothouse of Los Angeles. Blanche, who suffered in satin for the '30s soaps, is an invalid confined to her bed; Baby Jane, a child star who flopped as an adult, runs errands for Blanche when she isn't swigging booze, trundling around in a fright wig and doing ghastly reprises of her ancient routines. Like Sunset Boulevard's Norma Desmond, they are aging Hollywood grotesques caught in a cul-de-sac of remembrance - and now one or both of them seem to be going crazy. Robert Aldrich's great, gruesome Grand Guignol shocker, with a volcano of a performance by Bette Davis as Baby Jane. When she rolls her eyes at Blanche on the beach and murmurs, "You mean, all these years we could have been friends?" its enough to tear you to shreds.

In Woody Allen’s latest, Larry David plays the Woody character, a misanthropic NYC misfit who marries a naive Southern waif (Evan Rachel Wood). The film has ragged edges, but David and Wood give excellent performances, and the script is full of witty one-liners. (M.B.)
