Whistling in Brooklyn
Released: 1943
Rated:

The best of a brief series which featured Skelton as an inept radio sleuth named "The Fox" who always bumbled his way to glory. Broad, fast, and a lot of fun, with the 1943 Brooklyn Dodgers in the supporting cast. (M.W.)

After his dream of joining the Secret Service is crushed, a Capitol police officer (Channing Tatum) gets a chance to save the president (Jamie Foxx) when an armed paramilitary group seizes control of the White House. Though the plot's details are too crazy to be true, the leads are likable and the pace is just right. (M.B.)

Claire Denis’ fascinating character study portrays a woman (Isabelle Huppert) who tries to run her African coffee plantation after the French colonial government withdraws and chaos ensues. It’s far from a propulsive narrative, but it captures a unique perspective on colonial collapse without resorting to speeches. (S.R.)

Kate Beckinsale plays a U.S. marshal who finds a mutilated body in an Antarctica research base. The landscape is intriguing, but there’s no fun to be had in this dull, dour thriller. (K.J.)

Chris Paine's highly informative documentary makes the case that the EV1, a car that General Motors developed to comply with California's zero-emissions policy, never had a chance. The car companies, the oil companies, the federal government and we-the-people are among the culprits, according to Paine, but the feeling we're left with is less guilt than sadness as our oil addiction is allowed to continue. (K.W.)

Who'll Stop The Rain?
Released: 1978
Rated:

One of the roughest, most cynical and maybe the most despairing of "Vietnam" movies. Based on Robert Stone's novel, Dog Soldiers, about a doomed heroin run. The Nick Nolte character, incidentally, is a thinly disguised portrait of Jack Kerouac's chum and the Merry Prankster's driver, Neal Cassady.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
Released: 1966
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An evening of fun and games at George and Martha's, based on Edward Albee's corrosive drama about two couples whose faculty evening descends into Walpurgisnacht. When told that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had been cast as his George and Marha, playwright Albee remarked that perhaps Nick and Honey should be played by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, though he later immodestly claimed that Mike Nichols' film was "the best ever made." Albee's spare dramaturgy and piercing language still sting, though in retrospect it seems James Mason or Henry Fonda, with Bette Davis or Anne Bancroft, would have been a better match up.
