Wife mistress

Philandering husband is forced to witness his hitherto faithful wife's infidelities. Though a huge art-house hit, this is basically a one-gimmick "worm-turning" sex comedy, cheerful but shallow.

French New Wave director Alain Resnais (Hiroshima Mon Amour) returns to subjective viewpoints in this drop-dead-gorgeous tale of a man (André Dussollier) who finds a woman's wallet in a parking garage. It’s an often delightful, sometimes baffling Rubik's Cube of a film. (M.S.)

Horsemen try to train mustangs in 100 days for the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. The film's opening is hokey at best, but its horse-human relationships may summon some genuine tears. (K.J.)
Wild is the Wind
Released: 1957

Romantic complications in an Italian-American family living in the grape country of Southern California. An atypical but very interesting effort by George Cukor - reminiscent in some ways, of Sidney Howard's They Knew What They Wanted. Magnani and Quinn both give magnetic performances.

Wild River
Released: 1960

In the Deep South in the 1930s, the Tennessee River overflows its banks, floods farmland, destroys crops and kills people. But the New Deal has a solution: the Tennessee Valley Authority, a series of huge dams that will not only stop the flooding, but provide the valley with cheap power. All the farmers in the area have sold their land to the U.S. except one woman, 70-year-old Ella Garth, Wild River is a great, passionate, powerful film - in my opinion, Elia Kazan's finest work, and one of the five or six finest American sound films. It has a lyricism and compassion that almost break your heart.

Tired of his job at a ranch owned by Walter Buckman (Karl Malden), Frank Post (Ryan O'Neal) wants to pull a heist, and when his much older coworker, Ross Bodine (William Holden), sees nothing better on the horizon, the cowboys agree to team up for the crime. After filling their pockets with loot from a local bank, Frank and Ross ride toward what they hope is freedom. But the younger Buckmans, Paul (Joe Don Baker) and John (Tom Skerritt), pursue them over the rough land of the Southwest. (TMS)

A highly regarded Western that this reviewer, unfortunately, has never seen. Many people like it - but director Tom Gries' track record is spotty.

A struggling lawyer and high school wrestling coach (Paul Giamatti) defrauds an elderly man with dementia (Burt Young), then takes in the old man's teenage grandson (Alex Shaffer). This enjoyable dramedy, only kinda-sorta a sports movie, works, thanks partly to a great supporting cast. (K.B.)
