Collecting MadVideos -- A trailer for Drown Out the Daylights DVD from Crustacean Records

Last summer on the final day of August, the Madison-based rock label Crustacean Records hosted a showcase at the High Noon Saloon featuring performances by the bands Screamin' Cyn Cyn & the Pons, Ouija Radio, The Gusto, Droids Attack and Things Fall Apart. Several months later in the middle of last December, the label presented John Kruth & the Destructone Orchestra, Drunk Drivers, Awesome Snakes, The Skintones and Mad Trucker Gone Mad for another special show at the east side venue. All ten bands' performances at both concerts were shot live for a new DVD being released by the label.

Directed by Natalie Hinckley of Hinckley Design and co-produced by Crustacean dynamo Jake Shut, the DVD is titled Drown Out the Daylights. It is anchored by a two-and-a-half hour rockumentary that features all ten bands performing during the two nights of filming last year along with interviews that provide a closer look inside the label. That's only part of the story, though, as there are plenty of extras in the collection too.

The extras begin with Little Crab With a Package, a featurette documentary created by David Miller and Hans Hollstein about the founding and early years of Crustacean as seen through the contributions of contributing illustrator Pat Moriarty, and is available online for viewing.

Also included is live concert footage from the Crustacean showcase at 2008 SXSW with Peelander-Z and Birthday Suits, along with archival material from all fourteen years of the indie label's history. In addition to the ten featured bands, which are primarily from Madison and Minneapolis, the collection also includes performances by American Death, Ladybeard, Mucky Pup, Shotdown, and Uncle Eddie. Altogether, the discs present a broad look at the growing label's collection of bands, from its roots in and focus on punk, metal and hardcore to its broadening embrace of musicians that perform pop and Americana.

Crustacean is celebrating the release of this DVD, the latest step forward in a year of triumphs so far, with a trio of shows this month, starting with a pair in Madison. The fun begins with a premiere screening party at The Majestic Theatre on Saturday, July 19. It's an all night affair, with a screening of the main feature on the big screen at the King Street venue, followed by live sets by Mad Trucker Gone Mad, The Skintones, The Gusto, and Screamin' Cyn Cyn & the Pons. This will be followed by a gala happy hour party at the High Noon Saloon on Tuesday, July 22, which will feature a screening of the DVD extras along with a live set by Ladybeard. Then it's on to Stasiu's Place in Minneapolis for the label's Minnesota premiere of the DVD.

A two-and-a-half minute trailer for the DVD follows.

A larger and higher-resolution version of the trailer from Hinckley Design is also available online for viewing. The DVD is on sale for $12 through August 4, run $14 after that date, and includes postage for anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. Orders will also include a Crustacean band sampler and other label swag. Orders placed online are already shipping, and the set will be available in stores on Tuesday, July 22.
