The Big Sleep
Rated NR
Phillip Marlowe invades the perfumed, rotten world of the guilty rich - with a dying old millionaire in his orchid hothouse, a nymphomaniac stripped for action in a gay pornographer's bungalow, and a desperate little man who dies beside the cold filing cabinets of a featureless business office. Based on Raymond Chandler's first novel, perhaps the greatest of all the '40s films noirs. According to legend, the film was so confusing that neither Hawks, Faulkner nor Chandler could explain who killed whom at one point. Actually much of the confusion was caused by Warner Brothers, who demanded -a year after the film was shot - that Hawks shoot and cut in new footage with Bogart and Bacall. This footage was great (it includes the classic race track double entendres), but it chopped up an already Byzantine plot. It doesn't matter: Bogey and his menacing monochrome backgrounds were never better.
