The Last Picture Show
Rated R
A melancholy look at a small town in Texas in the early '50s. The hell-raising seniors of the high school's graduating class see their dreams and desires shrivel around then as the glorious past recedes on the local movie-theater screen and the future disappears up a dusty highway. Adapted by Larry McMurty (Hud) from his own novel, beautifully shot in monochrome by Robert Surtees, the film made a comer of its young director, Peter Bogdanovich. It has a sense of wistfulness and loss - a dissatisfaction with he present, and longing for the past - which his later films (Saint Jack, Paper Moon) often magnified.
