Caesar And Cleopatra
Rated
George Bernard Shaw, a man who detested the movies, was somehow persuaded by the Hungarian entrepreneur Gabriel Pascal to sell him the rights for the plays. Shaw would consent to be filmed. The result was a good version of Pygmalion (by Leslie Howard and Anthony Asquith) and a decent one of Major Barbara (directed by Pascal himself). Emboldened, Pascal then undertook this project, which soon became the most expensive in the history of British cinema (as extravagant as the American Cleopatra decades later). Other than this notoriety, the cast and Shaw's lines (buried Pascal's sluggish direction)., it has nothing much to recommend it, and might better be consigned to a locked pyramid and a mean asp.
