Duel in the Sun
Rated
In the minds of the public, Gone with the Wind was Davis O. Selznick's one unsurpassed achievement. They were wrong. Duel in the Sun - considered a reckless, lewd extravagance in its day - is his greatest film: a hymn to l'amour fou that dredges up every secret passion form the underbelly of popular fiction. The whole movie unfolds like a vast fever dream; at its whirling, hot center are the wild lovers--half breed Pearl Chavez, tormented by lust and social depredations; and her psychotic seducer Lewt McCandless. Three different directors, including Selznick himself, wrestled with this obsessive project; seeing it has some of the hysterical flavor of watching a crazed cathedral hurling itself from a precipice into the stormy foam below.
