The French Lieutenant's Woman
Rated
Two views of romance - one modern, the other in the style of a 19th-century novel - juxtaposed by an ingenious device: the period story is enclosed within the modern one by turning it into a film that the modern characters are shooting. Watching scenarist Harold Pinter, director Karel Reisz and the actors work it out is delightful; the cleverness of the whole intricate arrangement makes you hold your breath in admiration. The climax is glacially satisfying; it hits you in your brain, then your nerves, then your blood.
