The Last Hurrah
Rated
Edwin O'Connor's canny tale of the final campaign of a roguish Bostonian Irish-Catholic politico named Frank Skeffington - the favorite political novel of both Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Jawaharial Nehru -- in a somewhat more sentimental and despairing transcription by yet another Irish-Catholic New Englander, John Ford. He treats the material broadly, using it as pretest for a massive reunion of Hollywood's '30s "Catholic Mafia." It's a stirring film (though O'Connor disliked it intensely); funny and poignant - an one of the only times, in his final yeas, that Ford portrayed modern America.
