Long Day's Journey Into Night
Rated
The ashen day and increasingly tragic night of the Tyrone family, whose patriarch is a penny-pinching ham actor, whose mother is morphine addicted and close to madness, and whose scions are a self-flagellating drunkard and a tubercular rebel and writer - all of them lost in dreams, lost in the past, lost in an all-encompassing pain and anguish. This is a superb transcription of O'Neill's autobiographical drama, and all the actors are beyond praise. (Spencer Tracy - O'Neills favorite actor and his original choice for Hickey in The Iceman Cometh - made the worst mistake of his career in turning down the role of James Tyrone, Sr., after Hepburn had accepted Mary.) The high points are probably Robards' mad, sobbing alcoholic cadenza, and the final expression on Hepburn's face as she murmurs, "Oh yes; that was the summer I met James Tyrone. And was so happy, for a time..."
