Looking For Mr. Goodbar
Rated
By day, Terry Dunn is a schoolteacher for the deaf and disadvantaged. But by night, Terry prowls the singles bars and discos, looking for easy, anonymous sex. Someone's going to kill Terry, but in this cocaine neon twilight, with the crash of rock and roll on a steamy breeze and the sighs of climax splitting the blackness, who can guess the shadowy contours of his face? Le Petit Mort...The Big Sleep...The Perfect Score. This was a controversial film, and a lot of people hated it - including most of Hollywood, where you criticize singles bars and the creed of the Orgy at your own peril - but there's something in Richard Brook's impassioned, intransigent moralism I find appealing. His adaptation of the Judith Rossner novel is shocking and livid and it seethes with energy; and, as Terry, Diane Keaton is devastating.
