Lord Jim
Rated
Joseph Conrad's great novel of cowardice and redemption - of the disgraced British seaman "Tuan Jim," his exile to exotic Patusan and the peculiar vise of tragedy which twice catchs him in its grip - adapted with great lavishness and care by Richard Brooks, who is said to have reread the novel over 50 times while preparing his script. Brooks has a less devious or tortured nature than Conrad, and he loses much of Lord Jim's subtle, many-layered texture - but the movie is a good spectacle-adventure anyway. As the evil "Gentleman Brown," James Mason gives a nearly perfect portrayal of suave, implacable villainy.
