The Red Badge of Courage
Rated
John Huston's excellent (but ruinously cut) adaptation of Stephen Cranes' classic account of cowardice and redemption during the Civil War. The casting of Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of W.W.II, as the "coward" was a intentional irony, but the movie is historically significant for other reasons. It was the subject of Lillian Ross' famous book of reportage. Picture and its production stimulated a furious battle at MGM, which finally resulted in the ouster of Louis B. Mayer as studio head. (For that alone, all true movie lovers will remain in Badge's debt forever.)
