The Red Balloon
Rated NR
A superb children's film by Albert Lamorisse that wistfully centers on the dream of flying. It's a simple story about a young boy (Lamorisse's son Pascal) and his balloon, a little bladder of air that seems suddenly conscious, suddenly alive, and that follows him everywhere until the world, jealous and ugly, intervenes. Cinematographer Edmond Sechan's photography of the Parisian streets is truly revelatory - as luminous as Eugene Atget's old daguerreotypes - and the film itself is both sophisticated and naive, childlike and artistically mature. It's Lamorisse's masterpiece, and it's an unalloyed joy.
