The Ten Commandments
Rated NR
This is DeMille at his most enjoyable. Affecting a mien of impressive dignity, he comes on before the movie begins to inform us all of his dedication to the Bible and the integrity of his efforts. What follows, of course, is another outlandish, overblown, half-crazy spectacle - this time the life story of no less than Moses - full, as usual, of equal parts of adolescent prurience, historical inaccuracy, high-priced showmanship, and a Rover Boys instinct for adventure and plot twists. What can you say about DeMille? That he made millions by taking the Lord's name in vain? One of the funnier side-effects of movies like The Ten Commandments and Samson and Delilah is the regularity with which they received plaudits and awards from religious leaders - as if the church people involved had never bothered to open their own Bibles.
