Under Capricorn Rated
If Hitchcock weren't typed as the "Master of Suspense" - largely his own doing - he might have made more pictures like this: a beautifully shot, extremely romantic melodrama filmed on location in Australia. It's a study of obsession and love between classes and it features two tour-de-force performances by Ingrid Bergman and Margaret Leighton, along with breathtakingly virtuosic camerawork. This was the period when Hitch was experimenting with "long takes" - he made Under Capricorn right after the legendary "on-shot" Rope - and the film contains some of the most fascinating sustained tracking shots in all of cinema. Under Capricorn was a complete failure; but it's more interesting and rewarding than many of Hitchcock's successes.
