The Verdict
Rated
Francis Galvin was one a silk-stocking Boston attorney with a brilliant future. Now he is unkempt, alcoholic, an ambulance chaser, whose fall from grace is nearly complete. Into his lap drops an open and shut case: an accident suit against the Boston archdiocese on behalf of a women rendered comatose and brain-damaged after a botched operation at their hospital. But Galvin is not satisfied. Enraged and grief-stricken at the victim's condition and the hospital's callousness, he refuses to settle out of court, presses a huge damage suit. And now every hidden force of the American system of justice - corrupt judges, unscrupulous lawyers, spies and predators - mounts against him. His pursuit of justice becomes a desperate quest for salvation. A "problem" courtroom melodrama, much like Lumet's debut feature, Twelve Angry Men, The Verdict is scalding, relentless, furious - in my opinion a great film.
