Wind Across The Everglades
Rated
It is 1905. Deep in the Florida everglades, a group of wild, raffish swamp tramps - led by the irrepressible "Cottonmouth" - are hunting down and slaughtering flocks of wild egrets, selling the elegant feathers to the ladies of the towns and cities. One man takes exception to the slaughter: a nature studies teacher named Walt Murdock. And he mounts a determined campaign to stop it. But as Murdock and Cottonmouth will both discover, morality can be as fluid and treacherous as the dank, mucky swamp water, and the battle between "civilization" and "wilderness" is never an easy one to call. Nick Ray fell ill before finishing this film, but it's one of his most beautiful, strange and moving works: a savage, despairing poem, and a plea for ecology a decade before its time.
