The Reader
Rated R
Based on Bernhard Schlink’s Oprah-endorsed novel, The Reader wrestles with the notion of Germany’s guilt and responsibility for its war atrocities, and although things doesn’t quite add up, the movie’s beautifully rendered and features wonderful performances by Kate Winslet and David Kross, not to mention a movie-stealing cameo by Lena Olin. Kross is a 15-year-old kid who has an affair with a woman (Winslet) twice his age, only to discover, several years later, that she’d been a guard at Auschwitz. (K.W.)
