Madison says goodbye to a popular music venue this month. After 14 years of shows that put the "fine" in dining, Fyfe's Corner Bistro is calling it quits. This weekend, Fyfe's "farewell tour" enters its home stretch with jazz singers Gerri DiMaggio, Kelly DeHaven, Jan Wheaton, Sara Yervand and Lynette (Friday, Oct. 19, 5:30 p.m.) and troubadour Sean Michael Dargan (Saturday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m.). A final gig is being arranged for Halloween night.
Last May, country musician Owen Temple decided to end his graduate studies at UW-Madison and move back to Austin, Texas. "I realized I was going to have to pick music or grad school, not both," says Temple. "It was a difficult choice." This weekend, Temple returns to say hi to his Madison friends. He'll perform at the Wil-Mar Center (Friday, Oct. 19, p.m.) and Wonders Pub (Saturday, Oct. 20, 8 p.m.). Earlier this month, Temple released his new album, Two Thousand Miles. The disc is currently the sixth-bestselling CD at the popular Texas music website lonestarmusic.com.
Some of the best hip-hop talents in Madison don't rap. They make the beats and samples that define the vibe of urban music. Local hip-hop promoter Arthur Richardson began highlighting these producers last year with a competition that's part of his "Feel the Beat" conference. An audition for this year's lineup is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25, 9 p.m., at the King Club. A winner will be crowned on Nov. 17 at the Memorial Union Rathskeller. To register for the competition, contact Richardson at arthur@streetsofgoldproductions.com.
