Robert Plant and Allison Krauss
Raising Sand (Rounder)

It's an odd couple: The king of heavy metal meets the queen of delicate bluegrass. But dig deeper and you'll find Plant and Krauss have a lot in common. There was always more to Led Zeppelin than metal. They embraced folk and blues, and much of their music was acoustic.

So when Plant steps into this pedal-steel wonderland, he does more than accommodate Krauss. He masters the collaboration from start to finish. The tracks vary between the kind of sparse, down-tempo songs frequently found in Krauss' repertoire ("Polly Come Home") and edgy blues-rock numbers that could work as Zeppelin tunes with different production ("Gone Gone Gone").

The vocal duets are a highlight. They're rich with harmonies - richer than anything either of these singers could achieve alone.
