It's no surprise that local pop tune maven Adam Schabow (The Shabelles, The Kites, etc.) skips and gambols through "There Is No War On Christmas," just one of the holiday-centric originals on the new Christmas disc by Schabow & The Egg Nogs. Released in concert with a party at the High Noon a couple of weeks ago, the Nogs feature members of Goat Radio and Something To Do.
Schabow's high, slightly nasal tenor was made for pulchritudinous fluff, and here it blends perfectly with glockenspiel-style tinkling, light, slightly muffled electric guitar and a whistling synth hook that's fluffiness incarnate.
But since the lyrics are about embracing peace and love no matter what the cynics might say, the cheery, candy-cane mood Schabow first sets becomes more tragic with every successive verse.
That's a neat trick, even if it doesn't provide the heaping helping of sweetness and light pop holiday tunes usually provide. Too bad he didn't release the track a little bit earlier in the holiday season 'cause WORT and WSUM most certainly would have had it in heavy rotation.
