Phonetic ONE is an emcee and spoken word artist, and is a member of the First Wave Spoken Word and Urban Arts Learning Community at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He released an EP titled Phonetic Phenom on January 22.
Artists I emulate: Slug (Atmosphere), Common, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), and Jay-Z.
Performance style: I try to make it like a rollercoaster, an experience. The whole show is exciting, but as soon as you think it's almost over, I'm gonna try and take it up another five notches.
Venues I play: The Dinkytowner in Minneapolis and the Memorial Union on the UW-Madison campus.
Crowd: I prefer the whole hip-hop-moshpit-everyone-yelling-and-sweating-on-each-other type of crowd.
Philosophy: I like to meet the crowd half way. Hip-hop is about the people, and it is our job as MCs/DJs/breakers to make sure that the crowd is with us at all times.
What makes me unique: I tend to leave that to my listeners.
Best DJ/hip-hop act today: I'm not saying I'm a fan... not saying I'm not... but Wayne and Kanye pretty much got the game on the lock. Big ups to Rafael Casal and the Getback Crew though.
Upcoming shows for Phonetic One include:
- Friday, February 13: Friday the 13th Hip-Hop with DJ Pain 1, Fall Guys, and Kid Quo at Electric Earth Cafe.
