Droids Attack: Must Destroy
(Crustacean)
on

Droids Attack deftly transcend the sludgy cathartic doom that's grown cliché in heavy metal. The Madison trio of Brad Van, Tony Brungraber and Nate Bush can serve up droning electric guitar growls with the best of them. But they're also skilled at forging energetic riffs that keep their music vital.

On Must Destroy, Van's guitar licks are frequently frenetic. That's especially true on "The Crisis in the City (It's Increasing)," a track that brims with hyperactive paranoia. "Bluehammer" explodes like the grand finale of a fireworks show, and it inspires just as much awe.

Wisely, Droids Attack don't reach for vocals that compete with their ferocious sound. This is not an instrumental album, but the lyrics are quieter and secondary to the music. That decision gives listeners unfettered access to the power of the Droids' sound.
