The Shitty Barn, a popular live-music venue in Spring Green, released its 2013 schedule today. Though there will be fewer performances than last year, the lineup of musicians is at least as diverse.
The venue is known for booking Americana acts and some of Wisconsin's most-hyped indie bands. That trend continues this year with a season-opening show from Bon Iver affiliate S. Carey (May 1). Performances Count This Penny (May 22), Kelly Hogan (June 19), PHOX (July 31, with the much spacier project Sleepy Lesbos) and Field Report (Oct. 2) will follow. Several artists from the 2012 lineup will return as well, including Duluth acoustic bluesman Charlie Parr (Aug. 21).
Booker Chris Staples has also grabbed some real outliers. On June 12, the Barn will feature Madison's brain-scrambling math-rock trio Czarbles, and an Oct. 26 will feature the adventurous beats of DJ Abilities.
"The venue leans Americana for various reasons, but I've tried to indulge my rowdier, less-roots self as often as possible," says Staples, adding that this year's schedule deliberately focuses on Wednesday-night events rather than weekend shows.
Other intriguing acts include Walter Salas-Humara of the Silos (June 5), former Black Diamond Heavies guitarist Mark "Porkchop" Holder (June 26) and singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston (Aug. 22).
Staples advises Barn-goers to get tickets online before making the trip, as shows frequently sell out.
