Antelopes, the new album by Voltress, marks the debut of Cancer Records and Hum Machine mainstay Eric J. Hartz's vinyl- and digital download-only label Shortwave Records. For this release, though, Hartz decided to include a CD version of the album, having recognized that a few old farts still rely on the silver discs.
Participants in the Hartz-directed project include instrumental heavyweights Roscoe Mitchell, Richard Davis, Bernie Worrell, and Corey Wilkes, and the music leans toward the experimental-groove end of the music spectrum.
The record's long, episodic tracks may well put off the hook-obsessed elements of the pop/rock audience, but both prog and jazz fans should plug right into Hartz's mix of taped (and increasingly angry) telephone messages, aleatory synthesizer filigree, melancholy, free-blowing horns and melancholic art-metal that come together in the song "Guts and the Gazelle.'
