Local singer-songwriter Michael Brandmeier may never become the next Josh Groban or John Mayer, but his work is sure to keep garnering interest from TV and film pros looking to punch up an emotional scene or add some lump-in-your-throat pop to a credit roll.
Dawson's Creek, Joan of Arcadia, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Passions have already made use of his work, and the MOR pop/rock track "Falling Up" from his new album It's Only Rain screams for more attention from Hollywood. The uplift in its lyric is undeniable (e.g., "This is life/This is me/This is everything I wanted to be"). But it's that way Brandmeier's tenor voice breaks into falsetto in the quieter middle bars that seals the deal, releasing musical tension and ejaculating a heavy dose of self-regard simultaneously.
Without question, some sensitive coming-of-age drama about ordinary high school kids who find themselves doing extraordinary things is gonna find a place for the tune on its soundtrack. I mean, the guy's got the formula down cold.
