The 1990's
Cookie (Rough Trade)
on

The 1990's would more aptly be called 1979, as its retro sound evokes the heyday of Nerves-inspired power-pop. And that would be okay if the 1990's weren't an unimaginative glam-punk knock-off. Throughout Cookie, the Glasgow band is hell-bent on replicating the zany, ironic sensibility of the B-52's or the early works of Paul Westerberg.

That effort typically falls flat.

Indeed, it sometimes turns ridiculous. On "Cult Status," Jackie McKeown sings several repetitions of "my cult status keeps me alive," before he tries to shock us with the unfunny zinger, "my cult status keeps me fucking your wife."

Not awesome, dude.
